Blackline Masters

Another good site is this page of Blackline Masters that has all types of items that will help with learning Math concepts.  It has blank calendars, number lines, base 10 blocks, 10 frames, fraction strips, pattern blocks, and even tangrams.

Check it out!

Illuminations website

If you are ever looking for a good website for Math lessons or to help your child with Math, check out the Illuminations website.  It is run by the National Council for Teachers of Mathematics out of the United States, but it has lots of items that relate to us here in Canada.

Math Test

The Grade 4's will be having their first math test of the year on Friday.  The test will be on Numeracy including the Place Value system.

Students will be expected to know how to write numbers in words, expand the number (ex. 987 = 900+80+7), organize and compare the numbers and use Base 10 blocks to show the number.

Jr. Boys Volleyball

Hopefully the boys told you that we will be having a Parent Meeting after today's practice (approx. 5:30). We will be going over the schedule; expectations of coaches, players and parents; and the team fees and deposits.

Jr. Boys Volleyball

This week we have had a volleyball camp run by some Lakeland College Rustlers Lady Volleyball players. It has been well attended and new skills have been learned!

Practices will start next week with one on Tuesday, September 7th at 3:10 until 5:30. After this practice, there will be a parent meeting to go over what is expected of the boys and what the year will look like for practices, games and tournaments.

Speaking of tournaments, we have tentatively been entered into the Holy Rosary Junior Tournament on September 18th. There will be more information as we get closer to the date.

If you have any questions, please feel to call myself or Mr. Vince at the school or by email.

Welcome to Grade 4 Parents!

Welcome Grade 4 Parents!

First off I'm sorry that I was not here this morning for the Muffin Morning and for meeting the teacher. I was in Lashburn at JH Moore for a meeting that I had.

For those of you who don't know I have another position within the division, and that position is a Math Catalyst. I go to three other schools (St. Walburg, Paradise Hill, and JH Moore), and work with others on Math and Math concepts. I have this position every morning, so I may or may not be at the school in the morning. I am going to the schools to create a schedule, and once it is finalized, I will provide you a copy so you know the days that I am at Hillmond in the mornings.

Since I am in a new position, we have quite a few other teachers who are with the students in the morning. Mrs. Hunter is with them all morning on Days 2 and 5, teaching Science and Health. Ms. Parkyn is taking care of the Arts Ed, Ms. Peach is teaching Social Studies, Mr. Feil is teaching Phys. Ed. and Ms. Ziola has them for one computer class. I have the students every afternoon for ELA and Math.

We will have a teacher here for homeroom in the mornings and at a lunch. Mrs. Hunter will cover these duties on Days 2 and 5, while Mr. Feil will cover the duties on the other days that I am not here.

I know that this is kind of a crazy schedule, but all of us are working together and the communication will be strong between all of the teachers involved.

I hope this helps explain a few things, and again I am really sorry about missing the Muffin Morning. If you have any questions, please feel free to email me (shaun.hart@nwsd.ca) or phone me at the school at 825-3393.

I hope that we all have a great year!

Welcome Back!

Welcome back to the new school year! As you may know, I am now teaching Grade 4 ELA and Math for the 2010-11 school year. This blog will be used to update about things that are happening in the classroom and the school.

This year Mr. Vince and I will be coaching the Jr. Boys Volleyball team. There will be a volleyball clinic held Monday to Thursday next week after school. There will be members of the Lakeland College Rustlers to help the students improve their skills. The cost is $20 for 8 hours of instruction over the week. It will be a great opportunity to learn a variety of new ideas, skills and strategies.
